Halifax Thanksgiving

The pictures and events tumble through the mind
Brilliantly clear and fuzzy-edged both together
Ten busy lovely days with not-so-local family.

A 7 hour progressive Thanksgiving dinner
Where people, conversations, and connections
Featured stronger than the scrumptious food.

Zoom connecting those who couldn't be there
Kahoot reminding us of obscure facts of family history
40 years in Canada this year!

And then reconnections with friends leading to
An unexpected "dry-run" of an innovative sermon delivery
A delightful jam session after church that Grace and Aiden joined
A Valley trip to meet IRL an online friend - and her very big dogs!

Many, many times of talk with copious cups of tea
And cheesecake, or hot chocolate, or crumbly cookies
Sitting in living rooms, churches, or cars
Catching up with each other.

Aiden learning multiple trampoline tricks
In a marathon session with a new friend one day
It must have been at least 4 hours straight!
But then, that visit lasted at least 12...

The girls embarking on an adventure of adulting
Flying home early for school that doesn't believe in holidays
Navigating the city bus system to attend a friend's birthday party
No small feat with no phone data, multiple transfers, and everything unfamiliar!

And eventually, reluctantly
We had to leave to come home
And try to jump back into life in Ottawa on the run

Aiden to co-op school day the very next morning
Foster dog picked up, groceries bought
Correspondence restarted, stalled plans set in motion again

Home here, home there
An unsettling feeling we're well acquainted with
But when the distance is drivable instead of needing to be flown

Somehow the torn feelings
Of wanting to be here, wanting to be there
Are all the stronger
