The Not-so Sunny Seaside Holiday

This last weekend we went to Kep, a little seaside town. We traveled down with some others, who did all the arranging for us, something I was very thankful for - both the arranging and the help with Grace and Jasmin during the 3 - turned - 4.5 hour bus trip there! Although, I must say that the girls were excellent travelers; the only difficulties were when both of them wanted to sleep on mommy and when we had to try keep Grace from watching the Jackie Chan movie the bus played on the way home!
It was a very pleasant weekend, filling my need for family time, getting away from the city, and the bonus of being on the beach: hearing the waves, seeing far, swimming, etc. It was fairly quiet to begin with, but by the time we left on Sunday afternoon it was getting quite crowded for New Years, so we didn't regret leaving for home after just a day and a bit.
We weren't there long before we realized that this was our very first family holiday! Not by looking back or counting did we come by this realization, but because we were getting more enjoyment out of watching Grace and Jasmin enjoy things than resting or relaxing ourselves....

Exploring our hotel room when we arrived, Grace surprised us by climbing into the wardrobe and later, the desk cupboard! She was playing peek-a-boo with us; closing the door and chattering away until we joined in with the question, "Where's Grace?" Then, with great fanfare and delight, she'd throw open the door with a "eeaboo!"

Jasmin enjoyed stretching out in the comfy chairs on the dining veranda, watching the strings of crab and other shells dance in the breeze. A good thing she enjoyed it, as that first night we had to wait over 1/2 an hour for our food to be prepared!

This introduction to a beach went much better. When Grace was 6/7 months old we'd taken her to the beach but she didn't really like it, sand or water. This time she knew exactly what to do with so much sand: scoop, fill, pour, carry, dump...!
Jasmin knew just what to do too... roll in it, dive in face- first and check out the taste! She sure enjoys the beach at 6 months! We had two semi-overcast days, making beach time very wonderful - not too hot, and with less worry of burning. Even so, we did cover up in cream and came home a bit darker. Except Jasmin, who is still beautifully milky white under all that sand!

She didn't like the getting clean part afterward such fun play, although the taste of salt water did have her intrigued for a few moments.

And the water play after getting clean was fun! It was great seeing Grace and Jasmin interact so well together. It was Grace's first time truly acting like a big sister for Jasmin.

But it didn't last long - all too soon she was after Jasmin's milk yet again! Jasmin looks quite incredulous that she did it again, don't you think?

Saturday we hired a boat much like this one and spent the day on a nearby island. The beach there was much nicer (much fewer big sharp rocks), and quieter. I guess we had too much fun, because we don't have any pictures of us on the island.
That evening, waiting for our food, Daddy kept Grace entertained with her favorite ball on the sea wall. Mommy and Jasmin quite enjoyed sitting and watching them from the outdoor restaurant.
And the evening we spent quietly, as well, tired after a full day of outdoor beach and ocean play. We asked the hotel restaurant if we could eat on our room's balcony, and they obliged by bringing over a table, place settings and everything, when all we wanted was a few snacks really! Daddy read, mommy journaled, and the girls watched a PraiseBaby DVD.Grace knew just what to do: after all, what movie is complete without your very own snacks to munch on?

Sunday morning we learned by accident that actually breakfast was included in the room price! Oops for yesterday's breakfast bought next door! We ate on our balcony again, and then had a little church service of our own. Grace decided to preach too!And apart from the Jackie Chan video, the trip home was peaceful as we all took long naps!

Now we are settling back into work and sleep routines, glad to have been away, and glad to be home again.

Boxing Day

Another day of "enforced vacation" for Michael gave us freedom to go on our very first family picnic. We headed to the only green spot in Phnom Penh and created a curiosity by picnicking at lunch time instead of in the evening. Christmas leftovers - yum!

Hanging out with Daddy while...

Grace and Mommy play ball

And after Jasmin's asleep, some piggy back fun with Daddy

My favorite activity of the picnic: we got to lie on grass (!wow!) under a tree (such a LONG time since!) and watch the leaves dance in a breeze. If we could successfully ignore the traffic noise, we could pretend we were in the woods somewhere... Grace and Jasmin enjoyed it too. Daddy fell asleep of course!

Friday we are heading to the beach for the weekend! Our first time away for the sole purpose of rest and relaxation. Can't say enough how much I'm looking forward to it! All the more so because it is on a beach......
Christmas Day

Not many pictures from Christmas day, as we were busy preparing for, enjoying, and tidying up after a party! We opened our home to ICC folk who wanted some family to be with on Christmas day. We ended up with 13 adults and 6 kids!! It was great, loud, hot fun. Even waking up tummy sick, losing power, messing up mashed potatoes (! yes, I managed even that!) didn't spoil the fun. It went well, and of course we have loads of leftovers to sort through. Here are two occasions that did managed to get captured:

Jasmin with a new toy

Daddy and Grace doing the dishes after the party. Since this was about 8:30 at night, it is pretty impressive that she was in such a helpful, cooperative mood!
(by the way, this is our "backyard"!!)
Christmas on the 23rd

Most of Cambodia does not celebrate Christmas at all. Only Christians really. For most it is just another ordinary day - only those working for NGO's might get it off work even. So, the nearest Sunday becomes Christmas day for Christians! And it consists of a huge celebration service, usually with 300-400 extra people attending through invitations. Dances, dramas, a sermon, often a game of some sort, singing, extensive greetings, a sermon.... ours was 9-12, and then we ate a big festive meal together afterwards!

The coconut bowl dance
This is my favorite dance to watch as the music is less tuneless to Western ears and the intricate graceful dancing. The dancers dance in pairs, striking their bowls together in different rhythms while dancing in and out of different formations.

Sunday evening we went to Wat Phnom to see the monkeys. They are quite tame, and you can get quite close to them.

The first time we were there Grace was fascinated. This time she wasn't so sure as one of them bared its teeth at her!

Le Seoul
After visiting the monkeys we went for supper. At a nice Korean place. Jasmin was looked after by the staff, and Grace catered to in ways we have never seen here before: A plastic dish for her to eat from, a toy to keep her occupied while waiting, and watermelon! She really did eat all that watermelon herself!!

Lights!
And before going home, we walked by the US embassy and enjoyed the christmas lights and music show!

Memorable Moments

No they're not kissing!
Grace is fascinated with noses right now. All day long (and at night sometimes!) out of the blue she will sing/say "nose!" and bop whoever's nose is within reach. And not just once. Here's Daddy indulging her with a little nose to nose.

Tangerines
Jasmin is enjoying exploring new foods. She really likes tangerines - as long as they are not the semi-tart ones we can get here. The walker works great for feeding her, but we have to find a way to lock the wheels or something! here she is laughing hysterically at Grace who is laughing at her...

Feet
A surprise addition to our evening meal yesterday: fried chicken feet. Not much there to eat really. But Grace liked gnawing on it for the fried taste :o}

We have been waging war on mosquitoes this last little while. After suffering many itchy nights, fielding far too many warnings and comments about the oodles of bites on Jasmin and Grace, and trying out many different "weapons", we have finally won! All it took was a number of bug lamps, mosquito nets, sprays, raid, and coils... I'm sure the girls like the itch free nights too, but their interest shows more when the boxes are free for playing :o)

Daddy's girls...

Another victory! It has taken us over two months to get a good picture of this. On our way to church we often see this sight:

All the more fantastic when you realize that the tracks are still used by trains (as well as norries, motos, trucks, pedestrians...). Have to have pretty steady nerves to eat here!

Jasmin Expressions

Amid all the smiles is this classic look

Daddy can't resist feeding limes to his girls and capturing the responses. Crazy thing is they both will keep on eating the limes in their hands!

Rewarding response when Daddy comes home
All about Grace...

"me!"

Brilliant baby? Actually, she just likes to press the pieces into place. Though she did surprise us by naming a few letters correctly. Sorting the pieces from bag to board and back again can keep her busy for ages! Not what I bought the game for, but just as good.

Big baby or little girl? She can even actually walk in my sneakers, though it takes two arms for balance.

We bought Jasmin a walker - not for walking, but in place of an eating chair like Grace's. Grace thinks it was a lovely idea! After all, if anything new comes into the house, it must be for her, no?

New neighbours. There are two families near by that raise cocks for fighting. Usually they are not free, but one lot must have got free and bred, as not there are a few scraggly hens and chicks running around. The girls think it is great!
Usually the cocks are kept under these wire mesh baskets, but we found some that were being kept in fishing baskets! Normally these baskets are quickly placed over a fish and the fisherman reaches in through the hole in the top to grab it with his hand. We had fun watching this persistent cock trying to get out by jumping and sticking its head out the hole. Grace and Jasmin thought it was hilarious and shrieks of baby laughter erupted every time the head appeared!
One of our upstairs neighbours moved out this morning. She arrived here the same time as we did, and now having learned enough Khmer (a 3 on the FSI scale), she is moving to Preah Vihear province to join a translation team there. Since it is a fairly remote place, she had to take a lot with her to start off with... Here they are loading the truck last night.Took a while, puzzling out how to fit it all on. But success! All is ready for the 12 hour drive...

Done last night as they left at 4 this morning!
Sundays are a full day for us. We are at church from 9 - 1. Grace and Jasmin enjoy all the attention and people to play with. They also like the 20 min ride there in the "gongbie", an open carriage pulled by a moto, because there is so much to see on the roads. Sometimes it is hard to keep them still!
On the way to church....

On the way home... testimony to a full morning's play

The afternoon we nap all together, as we too are tired after a morning of only Khmer speaking, loud music, heat and dust. The girls just don't bother waiting to get to their beds!

A Mishmash of snapshots from the last two weeks...

Mail transport! In typical Khmer fashion we did just what was necessary to get a load of mail home from the office down the street. I'm not sure our stroller is going to survive more than it's first year here! It already has an interesting wobble :o)

It is cooler now, and baths are much nicer than showers because we can heat the water. And it doesn't stay warm long, so now we do the two girls together. It is fun to see them finally begin tointeract. We just missed catching them making each other laugh....

But here is a beautiful capture of Jasmin's wonderful smile!

Michael is away this week in Mondolkiri. He took the camera so I don't actually have anything from this week! I'd love to catch the look on Grace's face when she hears daddy talking to her on the phone! And the fact that Jasmin can sit by herself now and is showing interest in food.
Sorry for the missing week. Last weekend was the Water Festival, where it was estimated the city's population increased by 3 million! So there wasn't much internet per person :-) I was hoping to post about the boat races, but we never made it out of the house because we managed to be all sick together. The parting gift of the wedding we attended the weekend before was a family case of giardia (a tummy bug)....

The wedding was in Phnom Penh's new "water park"! So we went early and explored the place:
Before we even got through the gates we had to try some of the fair rides in the parking lot...
Daddy paying for the car train

Grace waving bye-bye every time she went past us!

Our intrepid explorer insisted on trying the big-kid slides! Granted, she only asked that once!
The kiddie pool with fountains and slides

The wedding meal was a bit of a disaster after the fun afternoon: neither Grace or Jasmin had the wherewithal to handle the exceedingly loud music, strange foods, and long waits. We had to take turns eating as the courses came so one could try keep the girls from wailing constantly. Needless to say, we left as soon as we could. The next wedding (this Saturday) I'm going by myself!
